When I founded this website in 2001, I shared my views on Malaysian Gospel Music on this page with a statement “I have observed the Malaysian Christian music scene for 22 years and I cannot say that I am happy with what I see. In fact, I am rather disappointed most of the time. Most Malaysian churches are contented to use songs from Hillsongs or Integrity Music for their worship services…”
6 years ago, that statement was correct and there were only a few Malaysian albums released. I am now happy to say that the situation has changed and I see some light in Malaysian Music. Some good artistes and songs have emerged in the last 6 years like Juwita, Patrick Leong, Liang, 1 am, Gabby Tham, Altered Frequency, Jonathan Sze, Chen Sing, Brian Yim, William Kok, Edmund Smith, Diana Wee . Lucy L (SAND), Jenny Liew, Michelle Tan, Prody G, Mayya, Joanne Ng, Chee Peng, etc. Older artistes like KB Chan, Geoffrey Woo , GT Lim, HT Long have also emerged in the forefront. Several churches like SIB KL, Calvary, FGA, Praise City Church, NLRC, FGC Johor, Fungates have also released some albums. I congratulate all of them.
I dedicate this page to all the local artistes and churches trying to do something with their music and continue my vision to bring Malaysian Gospel Music to an international audience.
After making an impact with his first 2 albums, Every Time I Pray in 2001 and Shining Stars in 2002, Wah Lok’s long awaited third album Messiah King was finally released in Jan 2007. He has taken a 4 year break but this album is worth the wait.
Messiah King contains another 10 of his original songs, 8 of which were co-written with Australian lyricist Barbara Tipper. The song Harvest of the Field , a slow ballad, won the Australian Gospel Award 2004 for the Best Hymn. Another song Birds and Bees went all the way to the finals for the year 2006. The title track Messiah King is powerful worship song with the lyrics focusing on Jesus as Messiah and King who should reign in our hearts. The song One Voice, One Heart is another good worship song used for the National Prayer Rally in Malaysia in 2003. Wah Lok also collaborated with Fernando Brito from Portugal, a professional wind instrumentalist, who recorded Every Time I Pray in Portuguese with orchestral arrangement. Another track Lighthouse has powerful lyrics showing Jesus as our lighthouse who guides us in times of trouble. The song has a jazz arrangement with Willy David Rebano on piano.
Timothy Lee produced the album. Lead vocals were performed by Barbara Tipper, Alicia Chew, Fernando Brito, Percibal Caranto, Maria Rebano and Lani Calderon.
EVERY TIME I PRAY is Wah Lok’s debut album released in 2001. Wah Lok has written more than 100 songs over 25 years. This album contains his most popular song Every Time I Pray written in 1981. This song made a global impact in Mandarin churches all over the world. There are at least 10 Mandarin recordings of the song in Taiwan, United States and Hong Kong but this album contains the first English recording.
Another song Approved in Every Way was written in 1982. The song is about the pioneers of Full Gospel Tabernacle (FGT) who made great sacrifices to serve God. Wah Lok wrote another popular song How I love to worship in 1985 with his wife, Bessie Mah. This recording gives a jazz arrangement of the song. In 1995, after taking a 6 year break from song writing, Wah Lok wrote the song Flow Holy Spirit. Wah Lok says, “ The song was completed within one hour. The lyrics and music came all at once. It was like the anointing of the Spirit suddenly came again after a 6 year break”. Flow Holy Sprit is arranged with some fanciful guitaring by Jordan Rivers. “We’re here by grace” was written in 1999 for FGT’s 19th anniversary. The song is a reflection of God grace and goodness
The album was produced by Timothy Lee. Lead vocals were performed by Bernard George, Patrick Leong, Maria Rebano, Elizabeth Hah, Kathleen Fong, Aris Siew, Jordan Rivers and Alan Tan.Wah Lok is presently the Principal of Tung Ling Seminary and Pastor at FGT’s branch at Sri Damansara.E mail : ngwahlok@yahoo.com | Free Download ]
EVERY TIME I PRAY by Wah Lok
Shining Stars is WahLok's second album. WahLok has emerged as an anointed song writer who captures moments of history in songs. The title track of his first album "Every Time I Pray", written in 1981 has touched millions of lives across Asia.
Shining Stars again contains some very touching songs. The title track "Shining Stars" is a very devotional song, written for the graduating students of Tung Ling Seminary. The song calls us live our lives ablaze for Jesus, a shining star for His glory. Another touching song in the album is "She moves her feet to dance" WahLok wrote this song about a girl in his church, named Judith, who fell sick and was totally paralyzed. The church fasted and prayed. Miraculously, Judith recovered. He attributes the healing to the intense prayer of the church.
The song "Beside You" was written in 1983. WahLok wrote this song for his friend Leslie Koch who was dying of colon cancer. As a church, they stood with Leslie with prayer and fasting until he passed away at a very young age. This song encourages us to stand with our friends who are terminally ill.
"Unheard Voices" is a song with a powerful message about the needs of the poor. WahLok says the poor are never heard. So are the children sold to prostitution or babies who are aborted. This song carries a message which he hopes will convict people to remember that there is a world out there with great needs.
Shining Stars is indeed an album which contains songs with powerful messages.
Released in 2010, Make Me Strong is Aris Siew's third album. The album consists of 10 inspiring songs written by Aris and other local distinguished talents. Aris’ own songs were birthed during his intimate devotion in God's presence. The title track 'Make Me Strong' is backed by an Afro Asian choir and drums played by leading gospel drummer Kok Yen. The ever popular song 'Every Time I Pray' is accompanied by nylon and steel string guitars, an African choir and orchestral arrangement. It starts off as an intimate prayer song and ends on a high majestic note that is befitting of El Shaddai! 'Everytime I Pray' is written by Ng Wah Lok and Voon Yuen Woh in 1981. For those who like vocalizing positive statements, there is a rap ballad in 'In Christ Is Hid'. This album will inspire you to inner peace, strength and purpose in God. Vincent Chin's melodious saxophone can be heard in 'Leaning On You'.
All songs are arranged and produced by Timothy Lee and recorded at Studio 2105. Mixing was done by JD. Mastering was done in US by mastering engineer Bob Olhsson. David Gary (of Altered Frequency) arranged for 'The Spirit' and 'Most Of All'. James Yee (Chenaniah Studios) arranged and produced 'I Need You', a song written by Lourdes Dass.
SAND (Saved for A New Destiny) latest release “Worship Forever” marks a major breakthrough as they brought together an international team of producers, singers, musicians, engineers from Kingsway Music UK and CN production USA to collaborate in its production. The album was birthed after months of waiting upon the Lord. The producer’s goal was to draw the listeners into a deeper worship experience with God.
The key worship song in the album, Holy Spirit Come is powerfully “anointed”. You will find yourself humming the melody rather quickly. My Heart Your Throne is another good congregational worship song. In This Land epitomizes the heartfelt passion and dedication of a teenager who loves his home country enough to say “In this land I will stay…In this land I will serve…This is where I’ll pour out my love…”. The title track Worship Forever brings you to a place of surrender and quiet trust in God, enabling you to break out in a song of worship even through the storms of life. Trust and Obey and My Redeemer Lives bring a modern touch to older hymns. The last song in the album Saved for a New Destiny has a driving rhythm and gets you all geared up to impact & transform the world.
This album is indeed a breakthrough into the international scene for SAND and should not be missed.
Songs of Ascents, by Esther Muiis a collection of 15 Psalms set to music word for word from the Holy Scripture. In her own words, Esther says, “From the start of the first psalm I worked on (which was Psalm 130) to the completion of the last one (Psalm 133), I have not ceased to be amazed, for the Lord has given me melody after melody to fit His Words. I believe this is because we, the church of Jesus Christ, are entering into a season when these psalms will become more and more relevant, as we look forward to our Lord’s return”
This is a very rare album of Scripture put into melody, word for word. The songs carry an amazing “anointing” which is rarely seen in many Christian albums. Esther recorded the songs at her home studio, retained simplicity in her arrangements and was able to capture her intimacy with God. Listening to the album is hearing Scripture in the presence of God, and in itself a worship experience. Ps 120, 123,126,129, 130 and 132 are all outstanding worship songs. Personally, Ps 126 is the most impactful. However, different people will find different Psalms ministering to them more as that will depend on the circumstances and needs of the listener at that point of time.
Esther is an accomplished pianist and worship leader who has written more than 70 songs over a period of 24 years. She founded Malaysian Christian Songwriter’s Network in 2006. She has released 2 other digital albums, Untuk Mu and In His Arms of Love. Amazingly she remains a full time homemaker and mother of 2 teenagers.

Paroimia – Youth Ministry of Full Gospel Assembly, KL (FGAKL Youth)
Paroimia, which means parable in Greek, drew inspiration from the Wordless book, or as some would call it the “Book of Colors”. In 2006, the FGA Youth produced a 15 minutes production entitled "Wordless", with absolutely no dialog. The message was communicated though drama, interpretive dance and colors. Drawing from that experience, the FGA Youth have returned to produce their second “musical drama and dance” entitled Paroimia directed by Darren Ong. The music and sound tracks of Paroimia are all their original music written and produced by Darren Ong. Another song writer Joe Loy wrote the song Love Came Down.
This musical drama is about a prince who was born in the Golden City. His name was Prince Elyon. That same day, the commander of the Golden Army, Kieron, led a rebellion against the King and stole away the citizens. It had been foretold that a day like that would come, when a savior would be needed. He would have to die in exchange for the citizens’ freedom. His blood for theirs. Prince Elyon was to be that savior.
Will Elyon be able to wipe the darkness of Kieron out? Will the people ever be free from the clutches of Kieron? Well, you will have to see Paroimia to find out. Hopefully the FGAKL Youth will decide to stage this musical drama again. Maybe you can persuade one of their members to lend you their DVD.
Accomplished song writer, Lourdes Dass has finally released his debut album Candles Shine in September 2009 featuring 8 of his original songs. The title track Candles Shine is about a life that Jesus touches which eventually becomes a shining light for others to see. This song went to the finals in the Malaysian Revival Songwriting Competition 2005 (MRSC). In the same competition, the song Together was first runner up. In Together, Lourdes writes about the need for churches to be united and work together to see a better Malaysia. Never the Same has a nice feel and modern arrangement, featuring Elena Koshy in duet with Lourdes. The song is about the power of God to change lives however bad they are. Other songs in the album include Jesus You Are and Rise Up which are worship songs, The Call, Nothing’s Impossible and Autumn Leaves. This album is easy listening and displays Lourdes as a versatile song writer.
Lourdes has previously worked on the album “Destiny” by New Life Restoration Centre Shah Alam in 2004. The title track “Destiny” written by Lourdes has also been translated into Mandarin and Hokkien. The Hokkien version of Destiny was recorded Joanne Ng.
Following the release of their debut album 'CSI', the Youth in FGCJB have returned to release their second album “You”. This album is self produced and all the songs were written by their own worship team. In particular, TCTT wrote quite a few songs in the album. The album consists of 10 English and 4 mandarin songs and recorded in a “live” setting. The songs are contemporary in nature and a mix of fast praise and slow worship songs. The musicians execute their instruments skillfully. “You are my peace” is an excellent worship song and probably the best song in the album.
This album is entitled 'YOU' as a declaration to God that, 'YOU are our focus'. In return, you will hear him say, 'You are my focus'. As you listen, open your heart and ears to Him. When you tell Him 'YOU are my God,' you will hear Him say to you 'You are my child’.

SAND’s new album “Only One Lifetime” marks another breakthrough into the international gospel music scene as two of the album’s songs, “Reign Forever” and “I Surrender All”, were included in “Heart of Worship 8” by Whole World Music, UK.
This album is the culmination of songs that were birthed after the 40-Day Nationwide Prayer and Fast in Malaysia and takes a shift from individual expressions of worship to congregational praise.
The recording was done in Penang, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, while the mixing and mastering were done locally by Nick Lee from The Ark Studios. With the help from arrangers like Andy Green from Kingsway Music, UK and singers like Brent Miller and Ingrid DuMosch, this album is bound to break new grounds in Malaysian gospel music.
“Lord Hear Our Prayer” is a prayerful number and definitely appropriate for Malaysia at such a time like this. Worshipping the Lord with “Extravagant” makes you want to break into a dance of praise while “Only One Lifetime”, “Reign Forever” and “I Surrender All” are powerful and reflective songs of worship.
By the grace of God, this album surpassed the standards of previous ones and marks another milestone for SAND.
ONE VOICE is the debut worship album of Ps. Justin and Ps. Jacqueline Ryan. The album centres on the power of listening to the voice of God and allowing Him to establish His plans and purposes in your life. This album is a fulfilment of God’s will in their lives. Justin and Jacquie also head ONE VOICE MINISTRIES, which moves around to different churches ministering in the Word, worship and conducting workshops for music ministries.

Fly is Amy Lim’s latest release of 8 mandarin and 2 English songs. The album, produced by Daniel Foo of Gecko Music, consists mainly of slower worship and testimony songs. Amy Lim brings an intimate delivery in her slower songs, Because of Love, The Lord’s Prayer, Would you come, Special friend, Redeem, My beloved and When you are weary. The title track Fly, however has a faster contemporary feel and is rather catchy. The song “If” has a rap feel and sung by Daniel Foo with a children’s choir. Overall the album is very soothing and easy listening for a sensitive listener.
At 14 years, Amy Lim was signed by Singapore Broadcast Corporation. In 1985, she was signed by White Clouds Records and released 2 solo albums. In 1986, at the peak of her music career, she left the entertainment industry to further her studies in America. Several years ago, she experienced the transforming power of God in her life. Army of Three
Army of Three is an Alternative Rock Group from Klang. Formed in 2005, the band consists of Jeff on lead vocals and guitars, Alex on guitars, Eddy on the drums and Darren on bass. Their interesting name is a reflection of the Power of Trinity, which represents the band?s faith and background. ( You have to think what their name means as it is certainly not the number of members in their band as there have 4 members). Recently, they released a single with 3 of their songs, Blind me to see, Take me, and I?ll never walk back.
With a blend of positive lyrics and cutting edge rock music combined with explosive live performances, the band is striving to make a difference, and influence youth in a positive way.
This is a rare Hokkien Album released by KB Chan who already has 7 albums to his credits. This latest release contains 10 tracks including his popular Father's Day song "Daddy, You're My Hero". Another ?Tharn Ean? (Sweet Incense) speaks of our worship as a perfume in God?s presence. ?Tharn Ean? reached No.1 in Soundclick, Contemporary Christian Charts.
A Cantonese by birth, Pastor KB was educated in English, and can neither read nor write Chinese. Nevertheless, God gave him the Hokkien song 'Tharn Ean' during one of his afternoon naps. With the help of his friends, he went on to compose 8 other Hokkien songs for the album.
KB Chan is a walking miracle. Despite the fact that he has no kidneys and has been on dialysis for these last 13 years, he is still ministering in churches and camps all over Malaysia and beyond. His life is truly a testimony of God's grace, mercy, love, provision, and sustenance in times of need.
Unleashed is the debut album of the Rock Band Blister. The album consist of 11 of their original songs written by band members Peter Khor and Micah Lee. Their songs boldly present some of the views, including the futility of war, hypocrisy, their personal faith in God, temptations, child abuse, self centeredness etc. Some of their lyrics are also rather thought provoking eg. He will be sending red roses to your grave, I?m Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde?disinfect me know. Even their song title are designed to evoke an interest eg. Ded Fly, Like Hell, Dying to Live, 247365. Unleashed is certainly a hard rocking conceptual album.
The band Blister comprises of Micah Lee (lead vocals), Peter Khor (Guitar/vocals), Nick Nathan (bass) and David Khor drums). The band?s memorable performances include playing in the Youth Unlimited concert series in Bangkok, an opening act for Sonic Flood in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at the MRSC 2007 and at Shah Alam Tribute (SALT 2007) concert.
