Celebration of Gospel Music

FOR the very first time, a concert was held to showcase talents as well as to recognise contributors in the local gospel music scene.

Malaysian Gospel Music Nite (MGM Nite) attracted a total of 1,500 people at the three-hour concert held at Wisma Eagles, Subang Jaya (Full Gospel Tabernacle).

MGM Nite was held in conjunction with the launch of the Malaysian Gospel Music (MGM) and the launch of the first debut worship compilation album by MGM, ‘Adore.’

Winning smiles: Impressions was awarded with ‘Bands and Groups that Made a Significant Contribution’ at the event.

Songwriters featured in the album includes Ng Wah Lok & Voon Yuen Woh — Every Time I Pray, Gabby Tham — You Are The Reason, Raymond Tan — Holy Spirit Come, Patrick Leong — On Holy Ground, Catherine Wong — Arise, Tabitha Kong – Forever Yours, Esther Mui – Psalm 63 (I Will Bless You While I Live), Kelvin Lim – I Will Declare Your Name, Sharon Amrita – Faithful God and Alex Tan – Totally You.

On the night of celebration of talents in the local gospel music scene, the crowd was entertained with performances by 16 Malaysian bands and solo artistes — many of whom write and compose their own songs. Among them were Patrick Leong, SAND, 1 AM, Josh Yeoh, Matilda Radge, HT Long, KB Chan, Elena Koshy, Julia Pong, Kelvyn Yeang, Joe Loy and the Warehouse Project, Free to Fall and The Good Shepherd Band. A special presentation on the historical journey of gospel music in Malaysia was also featured.

It was also a night to recognise and honour singers, songwriters and bands that have made significant contributions to the Malaysian gospel music scene. These individuals were presented with certificates of recognition. Among the certificates presented were “A Lifetime Achievement Award” and “Most Impactful Male and Female Artist Award.”

Concert attendees received a free ‘Adore’ CD at the concert.

MGM is a fellowship of Christian artistes, musicians, songwriters, producers and anyone involved in gospel music in Malaysia.

Helmed by a dedicated steering committee of five, MGM is focused on guiding the fellowship to advance and raise the standard of gospel music in Malaysia and to make an impact in local churches, the culture and the community. MGM’s committee consists of Dr Nicholas Wu, Ng Wah Lok, Lucy Loo, Esther Mui and Patrick Leong.

“We had initial discussions about creating a platform such as MGM 10 years ago. Today, through MGM, we have materialised our vision to bring together singers, songwriters, musicians and producers in our mission to raise the standard of gospel music in Malaysia,” said Wu, who is MGM president.

“We hope that with the release of MGM debut album, ‘Adore,’ Malaysian songs will finally be sung in Malaysian churches and internationally. That has always been our dream and vision,” said MGM vice-president, Ng.
